Safeguarding Our Neighborhood: A High-Tech Battle Against Fraudsters

Protecting Yourself from Sneaky Scams Right in Your Own Backyard

A Blog Post Written by: Caitlyn Eulgen | CSB Burlington Retail Manager & Security Coordinator

Hey Neighbors and CSB customers! Caitlyn here, excited to dive into a topic that impacts each and every one of us: fraud attempts happening right in our neighborhood, targeting your computers, and even your phones.

Imagine this scenario: you're going about your day, everything seems fine, and then suddenly, bam! A sneaky scammer sets their sights on you. No worries! We're here to provide you with the knowledge to be rid of these fraudsters. So let's dive right in.

First off, let's talk about something you might not expect: smash-and-grabs from cars. Yes, it's a real thing. While your car might feel like a safe haven, it's not a safe deposit box. Make sure to remove any valuable items like checkbooks, IDs, credit cards, or documents with personal information whenever you leave your car unattended.

Next up, let's tackle those annoying Microsoft and anti-virus pop-ups on your computer. You know the ones I'm talking about, where they claim a virus has been detected and urge you to call a number for help. Beware! These pop-ups are often traps, designed to either extract personal information from you or convince you to shell out big bucks for unnecessary services or gift cards. Don't take the bait and do not contact the number in the pop-up. Instead, shut down your computer immediately and seek help from a trusted PC professional. You can also contact Microsoft directly, by visiting their website.

Now, onto the classic "I'm calling from Community State Bank" scam. If someone claiming to be from your bank asks for your full debit card or Social Security number, it's time to sound the alarm. Hang up the phone right away! If you're unsure, hang up and reach out to our team directly by visiting our support page at CSB.bank.

These are just a few examples that we've been seeing right here in Southeast Wisconsin! Remember to stay vigilant and keep your guard up against those crafty scammers. We're always here to help you, when you need us. Thanks for tuning in, and until next time, steer clear of those scammers!
