Community State Bank Awards Scholarships to 15 Local High School Students

June 4th, 2018

Community State Bank (CSB) was pleased to award $7,500 in educational scholarships to a total of 15 graduating seniors. The local students attended Badger High School, Union Grove High School, Waterford Union High School, and Westosha Central High School. The scholarship recipients were an instrumental part in organizing and volunteering for CSB’s financial literacy program, known as MyLIFE.
my life webMyLIFE (My Local Interactive Financial Education) was developed by CSB as a comprehensive interactive financial literacy program for high school students designed to demonstrate the importance of sound money management skills.

Over 60 community businesses, 150 volunteers and the 15 scholarship recipients volunteered for this year’s program. The scholarship recipients also assisted with setup and preparing event day materials. “We’re extremely proud of these students’ accomplishments. In just this year alone approximately 1000 students were able to experience the program,” said CSB Market President, Neil Buchanan.

How does MyLIFE work?

Earlier in the school year, each participating MyLIFE student had the opportunity to choose a career path that determined his or her starting salary for the event. Students were then randomly assigned a “life” – single, married or divorced, kids or not, a credit score, level of education, and student debt – all potential real-life situations. Once their “life” was assigned, students were directed to the gym, where high school staff, local business leaders, community and student volunteers helped guide them through essential life decisions.

The participating MyLIFE students were required to manage a complete monthly budget including: housing, insurance (health, life, auto, homeowner’s), groceries, transportation, gas and repairs for their cars, even health emergencies and other unexpected expenses.

Since the program was launched in 2013 over 5000 students and 6 local schools (Lake Geneva Badger High School, Shoreland Lutheran High School, Shepherds College, Union Grove High School, Waterford Union High School and Westosha Central High School) have been able to experience the program. CSB has also awarded a total of 39 educational scholarships to local high school students.

“It’s amazing to see the effect that MyLIFE has on local businesses, schools, communities and the people of Southeast Wisconsin,” said CSB President & CEO, Scott Huedepohl. “Thank you to all who continue to volunteer for the MyLIFE program. We are so grateful for your ongoing support.”
